Angel Investment Overview
Angel investors are high net-worth individuals who invest in early-stage companies in exchange for equity (typically in the form of preferred stock). Many angel investors are members of angel groups like Mid-America Angels (MAA) and the Women's Capital Connection (WCC). These networks allow the angels to increase their access to investment opportunities and diversify their investment portfolio.
Technically, accredited angel investors are defined by Rule 501 of SEC Regulation D. An accredited investor is defined as “any natural person whose individual net worth, or joint net worth with that person’s spouse, at the time of their purchase exceeds $1,000,000” or “any natural person who had an individual income in excess of $200,000 in each of the two most recent years or joint income with that person’s spouse in excess of $300,000 in each of those years and who reasonably expects to reach the same income level in the current year.”

About MAA and WCC
The Mid-America Angels (MAA) is a network of nearly 150 accredited angel investors and the Women's Capital Connection has 40+ women investor members in its network. Our angel investor members have significant experience as entrepreneurs, CEOs, business leaders and industry experts. Many have founded and successfully built companies. Our network of members are located in Kansas and Missouri and seek exceptional investment opportunities with the potential for high returns.
While MAA and WCC are professionally managed by our staff, each angel investor member makes his or her own investment decisions. The MAA and WCC staff processes company applications, schedules entrepreneurs to present before the angels, and conducts back-office due diligence on potential deals.
Our networks provide the structure to aggregate the knowledge, experience, and investment capital of its membership. This approach provides an effective and efficient process both for investors to evaluate opportunities and for entrepreneurs who are seeking funding.
MAA typically invests in companies in the Kansas City region and funds deals in the investment range of $250,000 to $1,500,000. MAA typically participates in seed, Series A and Series B rounds. Depending on the size of the capital raise, MAA can either lead the round or be part of the investment syndicate.
WCC is committed to investing in women-led ventures in the Midwest. Since 2008, WCC has been involved in supporting angel investing and over 2,000 women-led ventures have inquired about angel funding, with 157 companies moving forward for investor presentations. To date, 25 companies have received funding, with over $5 million dollars contributed to the region.
